EVALUATION - Question 2

Q2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation:
Representation is how someone or something is portrayed. In the media there are plenty of social groups who are represented differently, sometimes they are represented positively and other times they are represented negatively, it all depends on how the creator/s of the specific piece of media wishes to represent them.

Gender Representation:

creatorThe protagonist of Manquant is a mother; having lost her child she is broken and weak. This is a common stereotype of women in films as it implies that men are much stronger and not as emotional. The film though does have other female characters which break the female stereotype, such as the psychiatrist who is a woman with a highly respected job, she is in control and confident unlike our protagonist.

Age Representation:

Our protagonist is also a teenager, therefore representing young mothers. Young mothers are often represented in a negative light in the media as they are often believed to be far too irresponsible to be raising a child. The protagonist follows this stereotype as she loses her child which perfectly encapsulates irresponsibility. The psychiatrist on the other hand is much older and represents adults, she is much more sensible and again shows she is in control. This is a common stereotype of adults being shown in a positive light while the youth is shown in a negative light.
