RESEARCH - Genre & Subgenre

Genre is a categorical form with it's own style. In relation to film there are many different genres including:
  • Horror
  • Thriller
  • Comedy
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Fantasy
  • Sci-Fi
  • Romance
Subgenre is a genre within a genre for example a rom-com (romantic comedy) is a genre within the genre of comedy. In thrillers there are many different subgenres including:
  • Conspiracy - stereotypically contains a hero or heroine on some sort of government related mission to overcome the protagonist who enforces lies and propaganda in relation to a secret organisation. Example: The Bourne Ultimatum
  • Crime - usually follows a criminal on their journey leading up to a massive crime.  Contains a lot of suspense and action. Example: Seven
  • Disaster - commonly follows a group fighting for their survival against natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and volcanoes. Example: 2012
  • Mystery - similar to crime thrillers. Concentrates on ones attempt to solve some sort of mystery. It looks at the cirumstances around the mystery/crime to gather clues needed and the audience usually interact in trying to solve the problem. Example: Flight Plan
  • Political - usually focuses on a problem that revolves around the government. Contains hero/heroine who tries to prevent something bad from happening. Example: State Of Play
  • Psychological - it shows the mentality of a charachter and thoughts that go through their head which creates suspense as it plays with the audiences mind. Shows the conflict of a characters mental/emotional state. Example: Psycho
  • Religious - the plot commonly relates to religious institutions, objects and questions. They tend to point out the good and bad points of a religion in particular the catholic belief. Example: The Da Vinci Code
  • Supernatural - usually presents an occurance that is out of the ordinary. A protagonist/villain has to fight against it to overcome good/evil. Similar to religious thrillers. Example: The Others
  • Techno - tends to focus on the manipulation of sophisticated technology by humans. A hero/heroine needs to fight against the new world. Example: i Robot
In particular, i am inspired by mystery thrillers. This is because of their ability to engage the audience in such a way that they feel like solving the mystery is down to them. They also include an aspect of crime and i like this as i am very interested in crime and the reasoning behind things. I would say 'Phone Booth' is an example of a mystery/crime thriller and during the thought process of our own thriller i will consider the themes and plot included in this film.
